Have you guys heard about star of the week? It’s basically when a child has been good the entire week at school he/she is nominated to star if the week for the following week which means being line leader etc. It’s a ceremony taking place every Thursday in our school in front of all the children in the class.
Where I grew up there was no star of the week system. There was no system of one child being pointed out as the star of the week and letting the rest of the class feel like they did less good than the star of the week. I know this comes with the British curriculum but it’s outdated and ridiculous!
My daughter was chosen as star of the week this week, for the first time since she started school. And I am not sure how I feel about it. She is super excited and happy, she even had her dad call me when he picked her up to share her joy with me.
But I don’t like it. She may be happy now but she has been upset and sad EVERY Thursday since she started school because of not being chosen as star of the week. Some Thursdays with tears and words like “Why am I not being star of the week”. Now surely this cannot be right, it doesn’t feel right. I am all pro encouraging children and rewarding in a good way but not at a cost of 19 other kids being upset and feeling sad. This system is outdated and not sure if it has any gain or positive impact in a long term. What are your thoughts on this?
